Lake Superior Day 2012 Events

July 11 ~ Wednesday

Civilian Conservation Corps in a Concert ~ 6:30pm
Munising Public Library, Munising
Bill Jamerson will present a musical tribute to the  CCC.  It will be a fun, nostalgic look at the 1930′s Federal Works Program that employed 3.5 million men. Hear hilarious stories and foot-tapping songs. This family-friendly event is free to the public. It will be outside, weather permitting; bring chairs and blankets. If the weather is bad, the event will be held inside the school.

July 13 ~ Friday

High Ropes Experience at Clear Lake Adventure Weekend ~ 4:30 pm
Clear Lake Education Center, Escanaba
Participants traverse our course 18 feet off the ground, accomplishing personal challenges while stepping outside of their comfort zones. Limited to first 20 signed up. Ages 10 and up. See Flyer.  Visit website.

Benefit Concert at Clear Lake Adventure Weekend ~ 7:30 pm
Clear Lake Education Center, Escanaba
Celtic, Folk, and World music duo, Four Shillings Short, will be playing the “Around the World in 30 Instruments” concert. Fun, educational, and absolutely fantastic music! See Flyer.  Visit website.

July 14 – Saturday

Youth Triathlon (Ages 8-17) at Clear Lake Adventure Weekend ~ 2pm
Clear Lake Education Center, Escanaba
Triatholon will include a .8K kayak (1/2mile), 5K (3.1mile) mountain bike ride, and 1.6K (1mile) trail run.  Participants may tackle this individually or as a team.  A Mandatory Kayak Workshop for all participating youth is held Saturday at 10 a.m. to teach and assess skills. Touring Event at Clear Lake Adventure Weekend ~ 4pm
Clear Lake Education Center, Escanaba
Available for those who wish to participate in a non-competitive triathlon experience.  Event will follow the Youth Triathlon course.  All-ages event (minimum 8 yrs.) See Flyer.  Visit website.

Native American Storytelling:  Tony Miron at Clear Lake Adventure Weekend ~ 7:30pm

Make your Paddle to the Sea ~ Porkies Folk School
Make your own ‘Paddle to the Sea’ replica Indian in a boat (canoe) and release anyone’s Paddle to the Sea and track on our Facebook page. More Information

Topics discussed:  1. How each is involved with the Great Lakes or Lake Superior – describe research briefly in simple terms.  2. How do scientists assess the health of the Great Lakes? – Describe what is sampled and why: oxygen, temperature, light penetration, benthic organisms, plankton3. Are all of the Great Lakes healthy? 4. Describe the Great Lakes Research Center—what is new, unique about it? How will it enhance Great Lakes research and education?  5. What can citizens do to protect the Great Lakes?

WATERPALOOZA Water Festival ~11am – 8pm
Mattson Lower Harbor Park, Marquette
This family-oriented, community-centered event will feature Michigan musicians, food and beverages, workshops, visual art and children’s activities (including a Summer Splash water slide!!). As an added bonus, the Flagship Niagara will be docked at Mattson Park for public viewing.

Be a part of the crew of a 28′ voyageur style canoe (Clear Lake Ed Center’s canoe) and paddle on the bay, hear voyageur stories, sing songs, try on period clothing and tools, eat fur trade food (Galette) and enjoy campfire.  Native American traditions, fur traders cabin, 12′ birch bark canoe display, blacksmith demo, all at the Alger Heritage Museum.
