experts from the audience, Roger Eberhardt to facilitate.
-concern was expressed that there were too many speakers and a suggestion was made to
shorten presentations from 20’ to 15’ and to further reduce time for the Sault locks
presentation to about 10’, especially if a model of the locks could be made available from the
Corps at the meeting.
Tour (from notes provided by Klaas)
GUIDED WALK ON FRIDAY EVENING
Purpose: to take advantage of the meeting location to familiarize Forum members (and
others) with the water issues at the outlet of Lake Superior into the St. Marys River
(Lake Superior water levels, levels control, water diversion and use, AIS pathways, toxic inputs
and Areas of Concern, etc.)
Walk upstream along the riverside boardwalk from the hotel,
• across Fort Creek footbridge,
• to Huron Street and over the Great Lakes Power outflow
• past the entrance gates of St. Marys Paper mill
• down Canal Street past the Sea Lamprey Control Centre
• to the Parks Canada office at the lift locks (option to drive to there)
• over the lift-lock gates to St. Marys Island
• along the trails to the head of the rapids to view the Fisheries Berm
• under the International Bridge upstream to view lower side of Compensating Works
• up the path and over the railway tracks to the north edge of the Compensating Works
• with a view of Essar Steel complex and the Upper St. Marys River
• and back again to the hotel
-tour to be all-weather, participants to be advised that suitable gear is recommended
-it was suggested that perhaps a hospitality suite would be helpful for those who would not be
participating in the tour.
ACTION ITEM #12 OF FEB. 11TH/2010: Jim Bailey to contact the Delta Waterfront hotel to see if
they would offer a hospitality suite at no cost.
FRIDAY SUPPER
-suggestion that Aviation Museum be used with catering by “Timely Manner” and that since the
aviation museum was so close to the Delta Waterfront that it could alleviate the need for a
hospitality suite.
NEXT MEETING
A decision was made that no next meeting date be set and that work continue by email, phone
contact and postings under “Planning” on the EcoSuperior site.
